Backup, restore and move WordPress between servers

Jun 18

I used to use Joomla as a CMS and then moved to WordPress just to see what all the fuss is about. I actually fall in love with WordPress but I always felt that backing up, restoring and moving your site between servers well be a problem.

When I use Joomla I always use Akeeba to backup and move sites from localhost to the actual servers. I thought it will be easy to find a similar plugin for WordPress but unfortunately it took a lot of time to figure out how to do it :(.

After some search I found a plugin to do the work. The plugin is Snapshot Backup and it’s a totally free plugin.

The Snapshot Backup Admin Menu

FTP Details Screen

It backs up the entire website (the Database, current WP Core, all the Themes, Plugins and Uploads). The result is a single archive file that will be uploaded to an FTP repository of your choice. You can use one FTP repository for snapshots from various sites and group them using File Prefixes and Subdirectories to differentiate between snapshots. If you don’t have an FTP account you can download the file from your local server at the end of the backup.

The beauty of this plugin is that it takes only one click to backup every thing but unfortunately it takes some time to restore or move. A detailed steps of restoring the backup can be found Here.
